Legendary Lakers Star Jerry West Opens Up About Kobe Bryant and Elgin Baylor's Deaths

Two Years Later, West Recalls the Shock and Sadness

Two years after the tragic deaths of Kobe Bryant and Elgin Baylor, Los Angeles Lakers legend Jerry West is opening up about the profound impact they both had on him and the team. In a recent interview, West shared his memories of Bryant and Baylor, as well as the deep sense of loss he felt after their untimely passings.

"They Were Like Brothers to Me"

West, who played alongside Baylor for seven seasons and served as the Lakers' general manager when Bryant was drafted, described his relationships with both players as being like family. "They were like brothers to me," he said. "I was there when Kobe was drafted, and I remember thinking, 'This kid is going to be special.' And he was. He was one of the greatest players I've ever seen.

Remembering Bryant's Passion and Baylor's Grace

West spoke about Bryant's incredible passion for the game and his unwavering determination to be the best. "He was a true competitor," West said. "He always wanted to win, and he always gave it his all. He was an inspiration to me and to everyone who knew him."

West also recalled Baylor's grace and humility on and off the court. "Elgin was a true gentleman," he said. "He was always kind and respectful, and he never took anything for granted. He was a great player, but he was also a great person."
